I grew up walking. Well, my parents would call it walking, I would call it stomping along behind them with a pissy demeanour and a desperate hope that civilisation was around the next bend. One of my earliest memories is of standing in a country lane screaming because I didn't want to walk anymore (I did this walk as an adult, it takes less than an hour).
As the ultimate act of rebellion I went to university in the flattest part of the country, escaping the tyrannous hills of Derbyshire for a land free of inclines.
Slowly but surely the hills seeped back in, a day trip to the Malverns became tramping round New Zealand. And as in some lesbian right of passage I spent my 30th Birthday up Snowdon drinking Champagne out of an enamel mug.
Hats off to Jeremy and Joan (my mum and dad) for persisting. My love of walking only took 30 years to instil.
